The Ecosystem Ecology and Soil Biology Group has been conducting research on the interrelationships of multi-trophic levels in ecosystems for over 40 years. Their main research areas include grassland ecosystem ecology, ecological restoration, soil ecology and resource utilization. The group is a high-level, characteristic, and innovative group composed of young and middle-aged academic backbones with outstanding interdisciplinary features and complementary advantages. The group consists of two professors, one associate professor, one lecturer, and one postdoctoral fellow. Since 2000, they have published nearly 200 papers in mainstream domestic and international journals such as Nature, Science, PNAS, and Ecology, as well as more than ten monographs. They have undertaken more than 40 research projects, including national key R&D programs, "973" projects, basic special projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, public welfare industry special projects of the Ministry of Agriculture, as well as key projects and general projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Seventh Framework Agreement of the European Union.

Currently, the group is undertaking seven research projects, including the National Key R&D Program of China "Smart Restoration and Synergistic Enhancement of Ecological and Production Functions in Meadow and Grassland Ecosystems and Demonstration", which has a budget of 16 million RMB; the Ministry of Science and Technology's Special Survey on Basic Scientific Resources "Investigation of Soil Animal Diversity in Eastern China's Agricultural Regions", which has a budget of 14.86 million RMB; the International Cooperation Project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China "Maintenance Mechanism of Biodiversity in Grazing Ecosystems with Multiple Trophic Levels: A Study Based on Cascade Effects", which has a budget of 1.97 million RMB; and the National Natural Science Foundation of China General Project "Geographical Patterns, Restrictive Mechanisms, and Sensitivity to Global Warming of Nordenskiöld's Love Worm Populations in Cold and Humid Forests of Northeast China's Middle and High Latitudes", which has a budget of 560,000 RMB.
